The Role of Climatic Change in Alluvial Fan Development

چکیده

Alluvial fans develop at the base of drainages where feeder channels release their solid load (Blair and McPherson, 2009; Leeder et al., 1998; Harvey et al., 2005). A classic fan-shape forms where there is a well-defined topographic apex. Multiple feeder channels, however, often blur the fan-shape resulting in a merged bajada. Alluvial fans can be found in almost all terrestrial settings. These include alpine (Beaudoin and King, 1994), humid tropical (Iriondo, 1994; Thomas, 2003), humid mid-latitude (Bettis, 2003; Mills, 2005), Mediterranean (Robustelli et al., 2005; Thorndrycraft and Benito, 2006), periglacial (Lehmkuhl and Haselein, 2000), and different paraglacial settings (Ballantyne, 2002). The geographical focus of this chapter, however, rests on alluvial fans in regions that are currently deserts or that experienced episodes of aridity in the Quaternary. The research literature contains a host of different ways of thinking about and conducting research on desert alluvial fans (Table 24.1). Despite the wealth of research hypotheses and perspectives, many researchers keep returning to climate change as a vital forcing factor on desert fan evolution. Although some reject climatic change as important (De Chant et al., 1999; Webb and Fielding, 1999; Rubustelli et al., 2005), the following sorts of judgments commonly pepper the literature on fans found in arid and semi-arid regions:

The study of the role of Quaternary tectonic and climatic factors on the geomorphological evolution of Meshkin Shahr depression fan systems

Aims & Backgrounds: The Quaternary period is considered as the interval of climatic oscillations (glacial and interglacial) coupled with tectonic episodes. Therefore, tectonics and climate have simultaneously governed the evolution of Quaternary alluvial fans. Unraveling the tectonic and climatic factors under varied depositional systems is therefore the fundamental issue in understanding the e...

Alluvial fan facies of the Qazvin Plain: paleoclimate and tectonic implications during Quaternary

The present research focuses on a detailed facies description and interpretation of five alluvial fans of the Qazvin Plain. Beside the tectonic activity that leads to the localization of the fans on the northern margin of the Qazvin Plain, the climate has a significant role in the occurrence of their facies. The alluvial fans are divided into three facies groups: group 1, group 2, and group 3. ...

8 Climatic Hypotheses of Alluvial-fan Evolution in Death Valley Are Not Testable

For the last two decades, climatically based interpretations have been the major focus in evolutionary studies of dryland alluvial fans. Climatic hypotheses to explain the development of alluvial fans in southern Death Valley, however, do not fare well when they are assessed with criteria used by philosophers of science. First and foremost, dating techniques do not have the chronometric precisi...

Determination of Tectonic Activity Based on the Morphology of Alluvial Fan Systems (Case Study: the Northern Slopes of Sabalan Volcanic Mount)

Aims & Backgrounds: Alluvial fans are one of the most prominent phenomena in fluvial geomorphology, which are found mostly on the mountain front. These landforms are affected by climate change and tectonic activity and record their effects. Therefore, we can use them to understand climate change and tectonic activities. The aim of this study was to determine the tectonic activity in the northe...

Quaternary cone forming model using sedimentary and geophysical (geoelectric) data in the southeast of Yazd city, Central Iran

Abstract: Alluvial fan are one of the most dynamic Quaternary landforms in arid areas. An alluvial fan in the southeast of the city Yazd was identified based on satellite images; in this research, the primary objective of this study is to investigate the surface and subsurface sedimentology of alluvial fan flasks. Twenty soil samples were taken for sedimentological studies. The result indicate ...
